Physical exercise for scoliosis
Whether the benefit of physical exercise for scoliosis
Doctors specializing in the treatment of scoliosis – lateral curvature of the spine – have come to the conclusion that the disease is not a barrier to performing physical activities. However, with the necessary caveat that the types and amounts of data loads must correspond to the nature of spinal deformities and subjective physical capabilities of the patient.
So what stress can have a beneficial effect on the patient suffering from
scoliosis, and that is undesirable and even dangerous? The answer to this question depends on several factors, because scoliosis can affect the spine, curvature of the spine is simple and complex, and the degree of deformation is divided into four categories. Where it comes to “classic” forms of scoliosis, it is recommended to the patient exercises can be generic, if the disease is severe and is accompanied by various complications, exercises are developed on an individual basis, the group classes physical therapy to such patients is not recommended.
For proper dispensing of loads using the results of the radiographs, dynamic tests and General examinations of the patient (heart rate, AAA, etc.). Not less important and subjective sensations experienced during exercise physical therapy and sport: for example, pain is an indication that the exercise the patient is not suitable. The signal for the abolition of certain loads is also the progression of scoliotic deformations, measured by x-rays or MRI results.
Physiotherapy for scoliosis should include traditional symmetrical exercises aimed at strengthening the muscular system, respiratory gymnastics, and special (corrective) exercises, which are developed the muscles on the side of the body opposite to the curvature of the spine. General contraindications are tilting, especially if accompanied by twisting of the vertebrae, reverse deflections (“bridge”), lunges, vises, turning the torso in the area of the shoulder girdle.
As for “useful” and “harmful” to scoliotic sports, I should say that the standard classification of activities divides them into symmetric, asymmetric and hybrid. Asymmetric sports (badminton, fencing, classic rowing, shot put) contraindicated even when I degree of scoliosis, the classes are mixed (volleyball, wrestling, football) are allowed with certain limitations only when the scoliosis I and II degree, but symmetrical species (skiing, swimming, Cycling, horse riding) is not contraindicated for people suffering from scoliosis.
A special role in the choice of physical activity for scoliotic, play swimming. Therapeutic swimming, that is, complexes of corrective exercises performed in the pool, even shown patients with scoliosis III and IV degree. Not recommended only swimming style “butterfly”, accompanied undesirable for scoliotic movements of the pelvic spine. The most favorable breaststroke, while patients with scoliotic deformations are combined with signs of kyphosis, it is advisable to go swimming breaststroke on the back. Good corrective effect has also swimming with fins or plates, worn on the hands of the patient.
